4 Tips for Breaking into an Industry You Know Nothing About

When Missy and Scott Tannen founded their linen startup Boll & Branch, they didn’t have a clue what it was like to launch an e-commerce brand. All they knew was that they needed to provide their customers an honest brand that sold high quality, organic cotton sheets. While Scott had a background in digital marketing and video-game development, it did not exactly add up to his home goods sector business. This couple started out with a small company in their living room to build an empire. Here’s what got them through:

1.     Being Persistent

You cannot just back down if your efforts do not bear fruit at the first go. You need to spend time researching and talking to your customers in order to learn how to improve their experience. You need to be persistent and stick to the same quality of goods you have been offering your customers. Many brands tend to reduce quality once they have hit the sales target because it helps them save money. The key to success here is being persistent.

2.     Have a Clear Vision

What’s your target? What’s your goal? If you want to make it big, you need to be focused. Do not let your fears and insecurities harbor inside you. It will only hinder your progress and keep you from growing.

3.     Don’t Fear Competition

Believe it or not, there is an advantage of being inexperienced. Being the new kid on the block allows you to go up against some mighty established businesses. For large businesses, however, it can be difficult to change their strategies according to the consumer’s demand, whereas a small startup has no problem at all in adjusting itself.

4.     Work with Someone You Trust

You don’t just want to start a business with someone you don’t know. Start a business with somebody who will support you and communicate with you. This will help you learn things from each other. It’s a big bad world out there. Might as well step out with people who have your back!
